Workshopped 11: Call for applications

Applications are currently being accepted for Workshop 2011, the annual design exhibition that identifies great Australian design and brings it to local and international attention.

Workshopped started in 2001 with five designers and a small but well-received exhibition. Ten years later and the event is a highly-anticipated part of the annual Sydney Design festival.

Workshopped features products that haven't been exhibited before. Event organisers look for designers that have identified and considered the issues related to a piece's production – whether limited or mass production and irrespective of the production method. Most important, they look for design that might be desired, taken home and lived with.

Applications for Workshopped 11 are due 15 April 2011.

Out of the Ordinary – Textiles in the Everyday: Dorothy Caldwell public lecture

The College of Fine Arts (COFA) is holding a lecture by Dorothy Caldwell, a textile designer known for her large fabric constructions.

One of the wonderful qualities of cloth is that it wears out, breaks down and is continuously being remade into something new. Stitching, mending and patching create a surface of unintended beauty and the sense of “lives lived”. It is from these ordinary practices that Dorothy Caldwell has developed the vocabulary of marks that she uses in the making of her large fabric constructions.

The talk will address this aspect of traditional textiles and how it has been used as a basis for Caldwell’s work.

Dorothy Caldwell is a graduate of Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia and maintains an active international exhibition and teaching schedule. She has carried out research in Japan, India, and Australia on textile traditions and is the recipient of grants and awards including the prestigious Bronfman Award given to one Canadian craftsperson each year.

Her work is included in many permanent collections including the American Museum of Art and Design, Canadian Museum of Civilization, The Carlton and Reta Lewis Collection in Washington D.C., The Canadian Consulate Bangkok Thailand, and the International Quilt Museum and Study Center University of Nebraska.

The talk will take place at 7pm on Thursday 29 April 2010 at the COFA Main Lecture Theatre, EG02, Corner Oxford Street and Greens Road, Paddington.

Dorothy is visiting Australia at the invitation of the Australian Forum for Textile Arts and teaching at their forum in Orange this April.

NSW Manufacturing Week: Women standing tall in a changing world

As part of NSW Manufacturing Week, a lunch is being held that will feature talks by inspirational women leading the way in the manufacturing industry and pursuing new opportunities in creative thinking, management and technical manufacturing skills.

The annual Women in Manufacturing Lunch is a highlight event of NSW Manufacturing Week 2010. This year's event will explore the role of women in manufacturing today and into the future.

Since the inaugural Women in Manufacturing Lunch in 2005, the sector has changed significantly. Not only have we witnessed traditional practices replaced by new high technology and advanced manufacturing, we have also seen change on the factory floor.

Women today have a stronger presence in managerial and operational roles. With a natural ability for team building, problem solving, negotiation and communication, women thrive in business. This extends to the manufacturing industry and consequently contributes to a more competitive manufacturing sector in NSW.

Join us to hear from exceptional women who lead, influence and contribute to the ever-changing manufacturing industry. RNC Global Projects Managing Director, Diane Dromgold will speak about her experiences in opening up new opportunities, employing innovative concepts and the current and future direction of the industry from her viewpoint.

Carla Geddes from Practicon and Sarah Adams from Business Capability Solutions will also provide an update on the Women in Manufacturing Business Cluster initiative to encourage and support women in this sector.

Connect with like-minded women owners and executives in manufacturing. Meet and learn from other industry professionals, including leading consultants, academics and practitioners.

This event will be held 5 May 2010 at Mount Druitt TAFE, Mount Druitt.

Design Victoria: Intellectual property for fashion and jewellery designers

In this seminar held by Design Victoria, experts from the fashion world will discuss their experiences protecting fashion design, dispel IP protection myths and provide strategies to beat copycats. This seminar will benefit owners, managers and designers from fashion, textile and jewellery businesses who are interested in learning more about how to protect their designs.

The fashion world is a fast moving beast, which is why it is no surprise that many fashion designers spend little time protecting their IP. But how would you feel if someone copied your work and profited handsomely and all your blood, sweat and tears was spent in vain?

Protecting fashion and jewellery design has always seemed a little slippery. After all, copycats only have to “change three little things” in your design to make it their own, right? WRONG!

A few copying cases have been fought out in Australian courts recently:

– Diesel vs yd
– Rosemin vs Gasp
– Review vs Lili
– Elwood vs Cotton On

Three of these cases were victories. Learn how the winners got it right and how you can do the same. Discover how easy it is for copycats to rip off an unprotected design and the simple steps you can take to avoid being a victim.

Attendees will:
– Increase their understanding of IP concepts and how they apply to the fashion industry
– Develop an understanding of the rules of successful IP protection.
– Learn what to protect – and what not to
– Learn from the experiences of industry practitioners and leaders.

Speakers include Trevor Choy, intellectual property lawyer, Choy Lawyers; Eddie Zammit, Founder, T-World and Principal and Creative Director, Grin Creative. A third speaker is to be announced. This panel will be moderated by Kate Vandermeer, Director, iSpyStyle.

The seminar will be held Thursday 13 May 2010 from 6:00pm to 8:30pm. Registration is at 5:30pm.

It will take place at Cinema 1, Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI). The seminar includes refreshments and networking opportunities.
