This category has a market development focus, aimed at generating income, employment and profile for Victoria artists by presenting their work internationals.

It supports offshore activities, such as international exhibitions and touring performances, that build export opportunities for Victorian artists and arts organisations.

Limited funding is also available for the development of export-related promotional tools, such as websites, press kits, catalogues and DVDs.

The program has a strategic focus on building international touring networks for small to medium performing arts companies, and exhibition opportunities for contemporary visual arts, craft and design.

The program accepts applications from:

– Individual professional artists
A professional artist has specialist training in their field (not necessarily in academic institutions); is recognised by their peers (professional practitioners working in the art form area); is committed to devoting significant time to the artistic activity and has a history of professional public presentation

Applications are sought for the Australia House artist-in-residence program. The residency will be held in Urada in Tokamachi City, Niigata Prefecture, Japan between 1 June and 7 August 2010.

Australia House was established as part of the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennial, a festival intended to revitalise the Niigata Prefecture, a rural area famous for its beautiful
terraced rice fields and heavy snowfalls

One artist, designer or craftsperson and one accompanying person will be selected for the program. The organiser will provide a grant of up to AUD $17,000 to the artist to assist with the costs of taking part in the residency.

Arts Victoria is currently calling for applications for their Arts Development funding program. The program provides flexible, project based funding to Victoria's independent professional artists and arts organisations.

The program supports the creation and presentation of new work in all art forms, and the programming of arts activities across the state.

There are three categories:

– Creation
Support for any stage in the creative development of a new work.
– Presentation
Support for the presentation of new work in Victoria across all art forms.
– Programming
This category supports the presentation of a series or program of professional arts activities that takes place within a 12-month timeframe.

You cannot apply to more than one Arts Development category for the same project in a given funding round.

Applications for this funding program are due 1 March 2010 for activities commencing from 1 July 2010.

Youth Arts Queensland's Navigation Arts Business Training program is a nationally accredited training program designed to equip young, emerging artists and cultural workers with the key business knowledge and skills required for a sustainable career in the creative industries.

This year the program will be delivered in weekly units. Starting Wednesday 17 February, Youth Arts Queensland will be offering one Navigation unit per week, with the program finishing 7 April 2010.

The course will be held from 6:00pm to 9:00pm in the YAQ training room every Wednesday night in order to allow participants to focus on one unit and complete all training exercises on the night.

The united to be covered are:

– 17 February: OH&S/Risk management
– 3 March: Grant writing
– 10 March: Working with community
– 17 March: Project planning and budgeting
– 24 March: Marketing
– 31 March: Design essentials
– 7 April: Developing a presentation/pitching

The training will be facilitated by YAQ’s new lead trainer Ray Bourne and a group of peer trainers. Guest speakers will be invited to individual sessions to offer plenty of real-life examples and case studies.

The training package is worth $1,600 but participation in the program is free to people 30 years of age and under.

Arts SA is accepting applications from independent South Australian artists for project grants. This funding category supports independent artists in the development of new work and its production or presentation.

It also offers assistance for touring and expansion of markets, of new and existing works, regionally, nationally and internationally. Applicants may also apply for funding to build their reputation through public appearances at festivals, exhibitions, events or by becoming an artist in residence. Funding may be sought for any costs associated with these activities.

Funded activity for visual arts, craft and design projects may include development, making of work, concentrated periods of work on a project, exhibitions and touring regionally, nationally, and internationally. Development of new work might involve periods in the studio or working with other artists.

Artists may seek assistance towards various stages of the work’s development with, or without, a public outcome.

Research projects are eligible if the artist has a track record of achievement and an exhibition history. Applications to develop and create new work requires evidence of the work’s form and conceptual basis. This may be a concept drawing, prototype or an existing work indicating how the new work will develop.

If none of these options are possible, provide a written description. While self-presentation of work is possible, exhibitions in venues that are professionally managed, well resourced, artistically and critically respected and supportive of artists’ careers make for stronger applications. The extent of the presenter’s or curator’s interest in the exhibition and financial resources will be a consideration of the assessment panel.

Assistance is also available through this category for marketing and promotion of exhibitions throughout Australia and internationally. Funding generally covers costs associated with publications such as brochures or catalogues. These marketing tools are most effective when created in collaboration with the presenting venue and part of a long-term career development plan. Funding is also available to assist with some travel and freight costs for touring of exhibitions interstate and overseas. It is expected that presenting venues will contribute to exhibition, marketing and promotion costs.

Applications are due 26 March 2010. Succesful applicants will be notified 20 August 2010.

Arts SA is accepting applications from independent practising professional South Australian visual artists, craftspeople and designers in the first five years of practice for their Emerging Artists Mentorships grant category.

This category is designed to foster a learning environment for individual emerging artists to enhance their arts practice through a one-on-one professional relationship with a significant practitioner. Four grants of up to $10,000 are awarded per anum.

Mentorships are a valuable pathway to develop new artistic and conceptual skills and focus on career planning and professional capacity building.

A strong mentorship proposal will place an artist in a close working and career guidance relationship with a respected and outstanding mentor.

Mentorships are usually self-directed. Artists can plan, initiate and develop their mentorship proposals together with their selected mentor. Day-to-day mentoring arrangements should be negotiated with the mentor. Arrangements could comprise of practical one-on-one experiences or a series of meetings for career guidance and artistic and critical direction.

Funding can be sought for, but is not restricted to:

– Mentor's fees
– Materials, studios and equipment hire directly related to the mentorship
– Travel, accommodation (local interstate or international)

In addition to general criteria and eligibility contained in the Arts SA funding handbook, proposals will be assessed according to the following criteria:

– The extent to which the mentorship will enhance and further extend or develop the quality of the applicant's artistic practice and thereby further establish the artist's career and reputation.
– The extent to which the mentorship stands to contribute to the development of the artform, locally, nationally or internationally.
– The extent to which the mentorship will contribute to the development of arts and culture in South Australia and to South Australia's reputation as a centre of artistic and cultural excellence.

JUMP, a new national mentoring program for young and emerging artists, is currently accepting applications from creative Australians ages 18 to 30 and in the first five years of their career.

JUMP is the first program of its kind to support young artists anywhere in Australia to work with industry leaders across a wide range of artforms. To be eligible, your artistic practice needs to fit within the artform areas supported by the Australia Council for the Arts.

The Australia Council supports designers and craftspeople under the category of Visual Arts.

Mentored artists receive funding of up to $5,000 for a creative concept, to be realised through a one on one relationship with their chosen mentor, and access to a range of professional development, showcasing and networking activities.

Designer Rugs’ inaugural Evolve Awards invites entries of rug designs from full-time professional architects, interior designers and interior design industry professionals (including industrial, product/object designers, interior stylists, textile designers and interior colour consultants). Six winners will have their rug designs included as part of Designer Rugs’ ID Collection 2010/11 and be in the running for more than $20,000 in prizes including a trip to Milan’s Salone Internazionale del Mobile 2011.

The judging panel will be comprised of Sibella Court, retailer, internationally renowned interior stylist, author and colour consultan; Shareen Joel, interior architect and industrial designer; Matthew Sheargold, interior designer and product designer; Stephen Ormandy, Co-Director, Dinosaur Designs and artist; and Yosi Tal, Managing Director, Designer Rugs.

Judges will consider submitted designs and rate each on the following:

– Overall concept and originality of design.
– Innovation: Judges will assess if submitted designs bring new concept to finished rugs.
– Commercial viability of the rug design.
– Demonstrated understanding of handmade rug construction.

Exploring the design and construction process of custom rug and carpet construction. The Western Australian Department of Culture and the Arts is currently accepting applications for their Young People and the Arts International Scholarship. The scholarship offers $30,000 annually to one outstanding artist or arts worker aged 29 years or under so they can undertake specialist training at an overseas institution.

The course must provide specialist training that is currently unavailable in Australia.

All applications to the funding programs are assessed by a peer panel against three general assessment criteria – artistic merit, good planning and financial responsibility – and the specific assessment criteria for this program.

The specific assessment criteria for the scholarship is:

– Demonstrated track record and/or outstanding potential as an artist or arts worker;
– How the particular course supports the applicant’s developmental needs;
– The reputation of the institution and how the chosen course of training differs from those available in Australia; and
– Opportunities for international recognition and career advancement provided by the chosen course of study.

Applications are for activity starting after 1 July 2010. The successful scholarship recipient will be notified in May.

Their exhibition program provides professional opportunities and support for emerging and established artists and also provides opportunities for externally curated exhibitions. They support projects that reflect innovative work; demonstrate new ideas and techniques, whilst extending critical debates.

IP Australia is holding a workshop in Brisbane that will help business owners understand the key elements they need to create and protect a leading brand. Workshop attendees will also receive access to a free consultation with an intellectual property professional upon request.

Over breakfast seminar attendees will explore why some brands are more successful than others; why consumers choose one brand over another and how brands' protect their interests in the modern marketplace.

Key topics for the seminar are:

– Harnessing the benefits of the trade mark system in order to create or evolve a distinctive brand personality;
– Using domain names as a way of enhancing a brand;
– Applying real life strategies to help expand a brand into overseas markets;
– Identifying key ownership considerations for brand managers;
– Implementing strategies to deal with direct competitors and maintain brand integrity.

Australian Anthill and Design Victoria are partnering to hold a seminar that will explore export options for Australian designers and their businesses.

During the seminar four Australian businesses will share their export experiences and provide invaluable advice. Speakers include Mark Saba, founder of Connect Language Services; Gerry Mussett, CEO of Sprocket Design; and Jarmal Richard, CEO if jdrlegal. More speakers will be announced closer to the event date.

Going global by design is suitable for creative businesses looking to expand into your new markets such as industrial designers, design agencies, advertisers, architects and others.

The seminar will be held 25 February 2010 from 6:00pm to 8:30pm. 

It will take place at Bureaux, Level 1, 530 Lonsdale St, Melbourne.

Design Victoria is holding a seminar that will illustrate how design can be a contributor to ecological crises and explore opportunities that designers and businesses may engage with to be at the forefront of design for sustainability and achieve positive and sustainable solutions.

The seminar will be held by Tony Fry of Team D|E|S and will be supported with practical case studies of successful eco-design and sustainable design solutions.

Owners and managers of small to medium businesses interested in discovering how design can contribute to achieving positive sustainable business solutions will be benefited by attendance.

The seminar will take place Friday 19 February 2010 from 12:00pm to 2:00pm at Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI), Federation Square, Melbourne
